Early Signs of Arthritis

Joint pain may be common for those who participate in high intensity sports. It can be caused by injury to muscles, tendons, and ligaments. However, continued pain may be a sign that arthritis is developing. Though it is more common for one to get arthritis with age, it is also something that can gradually develop if repeated injuries happen and proper healing does not take place. There are different types of arthritis, and they fall into the two main categories known as inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis. Inflammatory arthritis results from a systemic disease where the body’s immune system attacks its own joints and tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis is an example of inflammatory arthritis, and is a symmetrical problem that affects both sides of the body at the same time. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative ailment that comes from wear and tear on joints over time. This is a typical type of arthritis that can affect the big toe. If you are experiencing joint pain in your feet, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist who can properly diagnose whether arthritis is the cause and offer treatment options.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact Stanley Luksenburg, DPM from Home Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

Corns Can Be Surprisingly Painful

A corn can be painful, despite its small size. They generally develop as a result of excess friction caused by the shoes worn, and the pain can alter the gait, or walking style. Common places for corns to develop can be the side of the pinky toe or on top of the toes. Prevention methods can include wearing shoes and socks that fit correctly, and it may help to moisturize the feet frequently. Many people find comfort in wearing insoles or heel pads in their shoes and soaking the corn in warm water at the end of the day. This may help to soften it and can make it easier to use a pumice stone that can file down small corns. If the corns are recurring, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward additional prevention methods.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact Stanley Luksenburg, DPM of Home Foot Care. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.

Effective Diabetic Foot Care Routines

Diabetes is a serious health condition that may eventually affect the feet. It is a common occurrence among diabetic patients, and keeping a close eye on blood sugar levels may help to prevent diabetic foot ulcers. People who have diabetes may be prone to developing neuropathy, which is nerve damage that is caused by high sugar levels. This can cause the inability to feel existing cuts, bruises, or scrapes that have developed, increasing the importance of performing daily self examinations. This can be done by using a mirror to detect small cuts, or an available family member or caregiver may be able to assist with this. Diabetic foot care consists of trimming the toenails weekly and washing and drying the feet thoroughly. It is beneficial to refrain from participating in activities that can injure the feet, in addition to wearing shoes and socks that fit correctly. The risk of developing foot conditions may be reduced when glucose levels are controlled by being closely monitored. If you have diabetes, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact Stanley Luksenburg, DPM from Home Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

Examples of Congenital Foot Conditions

Most babies are born with normal feet, despite the few structural abnormalities that may occur. These can include clubfoot and overlapping toes and may be treated without having surgery. Clubfoot is defined as developing in the womb, and the baby is born with twisted feet that point inward and down. Metatarsus adductus is a congenital foot condition that causes the baby’s toes to point in and they can be difficult to straighten. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary for permanent straightening. Babies who are born with one or more extra toes are known to be polydactyly. It is a fairly common condition and may happen for genetic reasons. Some babies are born with certain toes that overlap and are noticeable when the pinky toe crosses the fourth toe. It is generally not a bothersome condition, but special shoes may need to be worn. If you would like additional information about congenital foot problems, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can help you with the knowledge you are seeking.

Congenital foot problems require immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact Stanley Luksenburg, DPM of Home Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Congenital foot problems are deformities affecting the feet, toes, and/or ankles that children are born with. Some of these conditions have a genetic cause while others just happen. Some specific foot ailments that children may be born with include clubfeet, polydactyly/macrodactyly, and cleft foot. There are several other foot anomalies that can occur congenitally. What all of these conditions have in common is that a child may experience difficulty walking or performing everyday activities, as well as trouble finding footwear that fits their foot deformity. Some of these conditions are more serious than others. Consulting with a podiatrist as early as possible will help in properly diagnosing a child’s foot condition while getting the necessary treatment underway.

What are Causes of Congenital Foot Problem?

A congenital foot problem is one that happens to a child at birth. These conditions can be caused by a genetic predisposition, developmental or positional abnormalities during gestation, or with no known cause.

What are Symptoms of Congenital Foot Problems?

Symptoms vary by the congenital condition. Symptoms may consist of the following:

  • Clubfoot, where tendons are shortened, bones are shaped differently, and the Achilles tendon is tight, causing the foot to point in and down. It is also possible for the soles of the feet to face each other.
  • Polydactyly, which usually consists of a nubbin or small lump of tissue without a bone, a toe that is partially formed but has no joints, or an extra toe.
  • Vertical talus, where the talus bone forms in the wrong position causing other bones in the foot to line up improperly, the front of the foot to point up, and the bottom of the foot to stiffen, with no arch, and to curve out.
  • Tarsal coalition, when there is an abnormal connection of two or more bones in the foot leading to severe, rigid flatfoot.
  • Cleft foot, where there are missing toes, a V-shaped cleft, and other anatomical differences.
  • Macrodactyly, when the toes are abnormally large due to overgrowth of the underlying bone or soft tissue.

Treatment and Prevention

While there is nothing one can do to prevent congenital foot problems, raising awareness and receiving neonatal screenings are important. Early detection by taking your child to a podiatrist leads to the best outcome possible.
